Organic Nettle
100% Sustainable and nature-friendly, Most Eco-friendly fabric on the planet
The wild-grown Himalayan nettle (Girardinia diversifolia), or `Allo` in Nepali, is as unique as any other textile plant and is used as a traditional remedy. It is extremely environmentally friendly, needs no fungicides or pesticides, and can be harvested for many years in the wild mountainous regions of western Nepal. It is home to many butterflies and has a positive impact on the climate. A fabric with a rich indigenous tradition in its most original, purest and most ecological form, hand-spun and hand-woven by loving and grateful people in Nepal.
The stinging nettle plant (Urtica dioica L.) is perhaps best known as an abundant and perennial weed, but throughout history, it has been used as a source of fiber in many parts of the world. This paper explores the potential uses of nettle fiber within a historical context and describes efforts made by the German and UK governments to cultivate and process the fibre for special war purposes during World War I and II. There has recently been a revival of interest in this fascinating fiber, and recent attempts to commercialize production are discussed.
